South: Arba Minch, Hawassa and Zway

The highlight of this itinerary includes meeting five different ethnic groups, seeing different markets, watching different types of birds and a crocodile farming, as well as the beautiful nature and lakes. On this ten day tour in the south of Ethiopia we will travel by car.
The Day-Programme



Addis Ababa

We will meet you at Bole airport and take you to your hotel. You will have a full day city tour in the city of Addis Ababa and visit some sites of your choice; the National Museum, the Ethnographic Museum, Trinity cathedral, Mercato (the largest market in Africa) or the mount Entoto hill just outside of Addis. Here you can see the fantastic view of the capital.

Driving to Arba Minch (8,5 hour)

This day will be very interesting, but long time driving. We will travel through the rolling fertile hills along the Butajira Road and next down to the Acacia Savanna on the bottom of the Rift Valley. We will visit the historical sites of Melka Kontire and Adadi Mariam (rock-hewn church). We stay overnight at Arba Minch hotel. Read more about Arba Minch.




Visit the Dorize village and Nechsar National park

We will travel 38 km outside of Arba Minch to visit the place of Chencha, where the Dorize people are living. After two hours traveling from Arba Minch at 1400 m above sea level, we will reach the highland town of Chencha (at 2900 m). Here you can enjoy the beautiful landscape and the beauty of the two lakes of Abaya and Chamo. We will visit the Dorize people in their famous huts (beehives) and we will see the preparation of their staple food made of false banana and you will also try to taste some if you want. After eating our lunch we will have a boat trip on the Lake Chamo and we will see a lot of big crocodiles and a groups of hippos, different types of endemic birds and the large biodiversity. We stay overnight at the same hotel in Arba minch

Driving to Turmi (5,5 hours)

We will drive further south and visit the place where the Konso, Tsamay, Arbore and the Hamar People are living. We will visit both an Arbore village and a Hamar village. We stay overnight at the place of Turmi, maybe we will see an Evangadi dance and maybe even a bull jumping ceremony.

We will drive to Omerate at the east bank of the Omo River, about 72 km (two hours driving) from Turmi. This is the area where the Dassanech people are living and we will cross the Omo River by the local canoe to visit one of their villages. Depending on the date of your coming (Monday is the market day) we visit the Hamar market, where Hamar People from a wide area are attending. We stay overnight in Turmi.

Driving to Konso (4,5 hours)

We visit the Konso people with their Maze like villages and terraces for agriculture. The Konso people are also well known for their Waga Steele, grave markers. The cultural landscape of Konso is the youngest world heritage site in Ethiopia. After visiting Konso we will drive to Arba Minch, where we stay overnight.

Driving to Hawassa

We will drive in an amazing landscape and within beautiful green nature. We will arrive to the capital city of South Nation and Nationality’s Hawassa. We stay overnight at South Star Hotel in Hawassa.

In the morning we take it easy and enjoy our breakfast with fresh fruit juice. After breakfast we will visit the fish market and an interesting park with apes and the endemic Gueraza monkey (that has a beautiful long fur in white and black) and see different species of endemic birds.

We will get back to the city and eat lunch at a restaurant and after you will have time to relax and have a refreshment at one of the lovely juice bars. In early evening, when the sun is going down and the weather is very nice, we will have a boat trip on Lake Hawassa. In the night we will be seeing traditional music ceremony. We stay overnight at the same hotel.



Driving to Zway

We will drive an asphalt road with in a beautiful scenery. Our next destination will be Lake Zway, Ethiopia’s water bird spectacle. Here you will see the great pelicans, that are the main stars of this astonishing natural live show. But you will also see:

  • eccentric Hammer Kopfrom
  • African Marabou Stock
  • Yellow Billed Stork
  • Great Egret Birds
  • fabulous Spur-Winged Lapwing bird
  • dazzling Black-Winged bird
  • African Fish Eagle bird
  • different types of ducks

After visiting the lake’s shore and the birds, we will get back to the restaurant to eat our lunch. Then after lunch, we have some time for relaxations. In the evening we will see some interesting and beautiful monastery churches by boat trip. After the boat trip we will go back to our hotel and eat dinner at a traditional Ethiopian resturant. We stay overnight at the hotel of Zway.



DAY 10

Addis Ababa

We will arrive early morning and you will have time to do some shopping and walk around in Addis Ababa. You can visit the Red Terror museum. In the evening we eat dinner and later transfer to the airport for departure.
